The Deepwater Floating Structure Model Competition has been organized by the Faculty of Civil Engineering in faculty level. Owing to the interest and support shown by the previous participants, Faculty of Civil Engineering is encouraged to organize this competition in a bigger scale with the participation open to all undergraduate students of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia and invited universities under the Shell Campus Ambassador program. This competition is aimed to provide a platform for university students to gain exposure in the field of offshore engineering especially in the design of deepwater floating structures. This program is supported by the Faculty of Mechanical and Kolej Tun Hussein Onn and sponsored by Shell.

Judging Criteria

:: JUDGING CRITERIA ::

  1. The team with the highest Efficiency Factor will receive 55 points. The other teams will be given points on a decreasing scale based on the ratio of their Efficiency Factors relative to the winning team’s Efficiency factor.
  2. The structure supporting the greatest weight will be given 30 points, and the rest of the teams will be awarded points on a decreasing scale based on the ratio of weights they hold to the winning team’s weight.
  3. The promotional presentation will be worth 15 points, with the judges’ decision to be based on the features such as presentation skills, knowledge of physical science, audience appeal and others.

Rules & Regulations

:: RULES & REGULATION ::

General:

Each team is required to construct a floating structure in 5 hours. The floating structure must be constructed ONLY from the following materials (provided by the organizer):
  1. Plain straw
  2. Masking tape
  3. Strand/ string
  4. Mineral water bottle (500ml)
  5. One knife and scissor
  6. A3 paper
  7. Foam cup

Specifications:
  1. Overall structures sizes
  2. Height: 600mm (maximum)
  3. Base (top): 180mm x 180mm
  4. Base (bottom): 350mm x 350mm
The structure must support an empty container at top of the structure

Basic Materials:

Each team will be provided with basic materials worth of RM 15million to construct the floating structure as follows:
  1. 6 bottles of mineral water (RM 6 mil)
  2. 1 meter of strand (RM 1 mil)
  3. 1 nos of masking tape (RM 2 mil)
  4. 1 sheet of A3 paper (RM 1 mil)
  5. 10 nos of plain straw (RM 1 mil)
  6. 4 nos of foam cup (RM 4 mil)

Limitations:

  1. Straws cannot be treated in any way to change their strength or appearance
  2. Each team will initially be provided with basic materials worth RM 15mil to construct the structure
  3. Extra materials can be purchased from the organizer. However the price will increase from time to time at the discretion of the organizer
  4. The supplied plastic bottles contain drinkable mineral water. If contestants decide to empty the bottles, the water must not be thrown away. Instead, the members of the team must drink the water to avoid any waste or they can use any container from materials provided by the organizer. Failure to comply; a point deduction will be sternly implemented or team can be disqualified from the competition.
  5. Prior to the testing of the structure in the basin, each team must promote their structure by giving a sales presentation using a PowerPoint presentation to the public (5 minutes time limit strictly enforced).
  6. Contestants are not allowed to bring any prototype or model built prior to the competition into the competition hall.
  7. The structure must float freely without any mooring system.
  8. During the test, the loading process will be carried out until the structure reaches the allowable maximum draught of 20 cm.
Disqualified:

Participant shall be disqualified from the competition if:

  1. The dimension of the structure is greater than the maximum specified dimension:
    • Height: 600mm (maximum)
    • Base (top): 180mm x 180mm
    • Base (bottom): 350mm x 350mm
  2. The construction of the structure takes more than 5 hours
  3. The presentation is more than 5 minutes
Structure will not be put into test if:
  1. Any materials others than those specified are used
  2. Load container will not rest on top

Goal:

  1. The team should aim to design a structure with the maximum load bearing capability, stable with minimum cost.
  2. This is quantified by the Efficiency Factors:
Efficiency Factors = (Maximum Load/ Weight of structure) x (Basic cost/ Overall cost)
